This Year I Promise:
1. Your education here is designed to liberate you, helping you to become critical, creative, free, and active. What you learn must help you to be able to improve the quality of your life, must improve the quality of your family, community, nation, environment, and world.
2. I will ask questions to keep you thinking and engaged. Questions lead to creativity and creativity can lead to positive experiences, self growth, action, and new tomorrows.
3. What we learn about must be relevant. Subjects and issues that cause excitement, hope, fear, or anger are important here! You must be connected to what we are learning!!!
4. Everyone in this class will become a learner and a teacher! We will have tons of dialogue each day!!! Listening cannot be your only job. You must share your thoughts. Your voice is important!!
Our theme for this year in my class is "Who am I Becoming: Analyzing My Humanity"
At your age you may begin to ask yourself, "Who am I?" Maybe other people may even ask you, "So, who are you? What are your interests? What is your ethnicity, culture, religion, worldview? What do you like and dislike?" Well, these are all great questions and they are good to think about and discuss, however we will not analyze "WHO ARE YOU?" but we will focus on "Who am I Becoming?" Throughout this year we will learn a lot about ourselves so that we can become better students, leaders, and overall human beings!
4 Classroom Expectations!!
Development of Critical Consciousness - I want you to learn how to read the WORD and how to read the WORLD. I want you to ask important questions such as "WHY?" "WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?" WHY DOES THE WORLD OPERATE AS SUCH?" "WHY ARE CERTAIN SITUATIONS OCCURRING?" etc.....
Academic Identity - I want you to be proud of being smart!!! I want you to strive to become a scholar, an intellectual, a big thinker. I want you to be proud of being able to read the word and the world. I want you to be recognized by your peers as an expert. I want others around you to look up to you because of your smartness and your ability to read and write well. I want you to have SWAGGER, not because you dress cool or because you are a good athlete, but SWAGGER because you drop it like its hot when it comes to education!!
Relationships - I want you to have great friendships with other students and teachers. I want you to learn and embrace En Lak' Ech (You are my other Me). I want to you to know that I (and your other teachers) truly care about you! I want others around you to feel that they are beautiful regardless of how they think, dress, look, speak, etc.
Moral Commitment - I want you to find ways to use your gifts and knowledge in order to give back to others. How can you make the world a better place? How can you help others? How can we become better human beings?
